The Role: Environment and Climate Change Assistant
The Environment and Climate Change Assistant will provide technical and operational support in the design, monitoring, and implementation of FAO’s environment and climate change programs in Tanzania.
The position is based in Dar es Salaam, but responsibilities will involve engagement with national, regional, and district-level stakeholders across the country. The role requires strong technical knowledge, project management abilities, and the capacity to collaborate across diverse institutions.

Technical Focus
The Environment and Climate Change Assistant will focus on:

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Environment and Climate Change Assistant will undertake the following:
Project Delivery and Support
- Provide day-to-day technical and operational support to project management units (PMU) and operational partners (OPs).
- Monitor and support the implementation of risk mitigation plans for partners.
- Organize and participate in monitoring, assessments, and evaluation activities for environment and climate change projects.
Technical Contributions
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, policy briefs, and analytical papers on environment and climate change.
- Provide inputs on climate-resilient agricultural practices, sustainable land use planning, and natural resource management.
- Support the development of climate risk assessments and vulnerability analyses to inform project strategies.
- Research, collect, analyze, and synthesize information for the preparation of new environmental and climate change project proposals.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Engage with national, regional, and district stakeholders, including ministries, civil society organizations, NGOs, and private sector actors.
- Facilitate stakeholder consultations to inform project design, delivery, and monitoring.
- Support FAO’s Coordination Unit for Forestry and Natural Resources (CUFONA), ensuring integration with technical units FRURT and SFS.
Communication and Knowledge Sharing
- Prepare regular progress reports, technical documents, and knowledge products.
- Support FAO Tanzania’s visibility and communication efforts on environment and climate change programs.
- Share lessons learned and contribute to capacity development activities, including workshops, training sessions, and technical meetings.
Other Responsibilities
- Support the organization of workshops, meetings, and training sessions.
- Handle logistical arrangements for project development and stakeholder engagement.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisors in support of FAO’s mission and strategic framework.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates will be assessed against the following essential qualifications:
- Advanced university degree in:
- Environmental science
- Climate change
- Conservation
- Climate-smart agriculture
- Natural resource management (NRM)
- Forestry
- Community development
- Or other relevant fields
- At least five years of professional experience with international, regional, or national organizations in environment, forestry, NRM, or land management.
- Working knowledge of English (both written and spoken).
- Nationality: Must be a Tanzanian citizen.
