Position Overview: Communications Officer – Kinshasa

The Communications Officer will report directly to the Head of Communications, Marketing and Advocacy/Partnerships Unit at the WFP Country Office in Kinshasa. The officer will play a key role in implementing WFP’s country communications strategy and work plans to enhance the visibility of WFP’s operations, programs, and humanitarian response initiatives across the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This role requires a highly motivated, creative, and proactive communications professional with experience in media engagement, content creation, event management, and social media. The officer will also provide support for donor visibility, advocacy efforts, and capacity-building initiatives across WFP operations.


Key Responsibilities

Communications Strategy & Implementation

  • Support the implementation of the WFP country communications strategy and project-specific communication work plans, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to create high-quality communication products, including newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, and reports highlighting WFP’s humanitarian work.
  • Contribute to the development of strategic communication initiatives to strengthen WFP’s presence and reputation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Content Creation & Media Engagement

  • Collect and produce audiovisual content (photos, videos, graphics) for internal and external communications.
  • Write human interest stories, press releases, social media posts, and key messages that communicate WFP’s impact and humanitarian interventions.
  • Support the management of social media channels, ensuring consistent messaging and engagement across platforms.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local and international media outlets, journalists, and influencers to enhance outreach efforts.

Event Management & Visibility Activities

  • Organize high-profile events, including donor handover ceremonies, agreement signings, and public advocacy events.
  • Ensure WFP branding and visual identity are consistently applied across all event materials and media outputs.
  • Provide logistical and technical support for events, including audiovisual setups, press briefings, and digital coverage.

Monitoring & Analysis

  • Monitor and analyze traditional and social media coverage to inform communication strategies.
  • Conduct partner intelligence mapping and analyze news trends to identify opportunities for engagement.
  • Prepare reports on communication activities, visibility efforts, and engagement outcomes for management and donors.

Capacity Building & Advisory

  • Provide guidance and technical support to WFP staff on all aspects of communication, including media engagement, content creation, and social media management.
  • Support internal workshops, trainings, and mentoring programs to strengthen communication capacities across the country office.
  • Ensure all communication outputs adhere to WFP branding, corporate standards, and quality assurance measures.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Advanced University Degree (Master’s level) in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations, or a related field.
  • A first-level University degree combined with additional years of professional experience may be considered.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of postgraduate professional experience in communications, public relations, media engagement, or related fields.
  • Experience in event management, donor visibility activities, and media relations is highly desirable.
  • Previous work experience in a humanitarian organization, UN agency, or international NGO is an asset.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in French (C-level) and intermediate proficiency in English (B-level).
  • Proven ability to plan, coordinate, and execute high-profile events.
  • Strong experience in multimedia content production, including videography, photography, and graphic design.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, online content management, and digital outreach strategies.
  • Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including government representatives, donors, media, and civil society partners.
  • Knowledge of the political, social, and economic context of the Democratic Republic of Congo is advantageous.
