The Office of the Executive Director (OED) leads WFP’s strategic priorities, global messaging, and senior-level communications.
WFP is seeking a highly skilled Communications Consultant to serve as Head of Communications for OED, providing expert leadership, strategic direction, and high-level support to the Executive Director and senior leadership team.
Purpose of the Role
The Communications Consultant will lead the design, execution, and oversight of communications strategies for the Office of the Executive Director. The role ensures that WFP’s global messaging is aligned, impactful, and responsive to the rapidly evolving humanitarian landscape. The Consultant will advise the Executive Director, strengthen organizational visibility, support crisis communications, and guide internal and external messaging.

Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Communications Leadership
- Develop and implement high-level communications strategies aligned with the Executive Director’s priorities.
- Oversee messaging across speeches, statements, press releases, interviews, and strategic documents.
- Provide authoritative advice to leadership on communications opportunities and risks.
- Ensure coherent, accurate, and timely messaging across global teams.
2. External Communications & Media Engagement
- Lead the planning and execution of high-profile communications campaigns.
- Oversee media relations, including interviews, talking points, briefings, and press interactions.
- Review and approve all external content for accuracy, tone, and alignment with WFP’s brand.
- Strengthen WFP’s visibility across digital, social, and traditional media platforms.
3. Crisis Communications
- Advise OED on crisis preparedness and response strategies.
- Develop and maintain crisis communication protocols.
- Manage reputational risk through rapid, accurate, and coordinated messaging.
- Liaise with global communications teams to ensure unified crisis response.
4. Internal Communications & Staff Engagement
- Coordinate internal communications from OED to staff at global and field levels.
- Support the Executive Director with internal updates, circulars, and operational messages.
- Promote organizational cohesion and information flow through clear communication channels.
5. Leadership, Coordination & Representation
- Lead and coordinate cross-divisional communication efforts.
- Represent the Executive Director’s communication interests within and outside the organization.
- Foster a collaborative environment across WFP global offices.
- Manage relationships with external stakeholders, partners, and media agencies.
6. Content Oversight and Quality Assurance
- Review and edit key content including speeches, op-eds, scripts, articles, and reports.
- Ensure all materials reflect WFP’s values, voice, and strategic goals.
- Maintain high standards of clarity, quality, and impact across all communication outputs.

Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- Advanced University Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field.
- Or a First University Degree with additional relevant experience.
Experience:
- At least 10 years of international professional experience in communications, media relations, public information, or strategic communication.
- Proven experience advising senior leadership in large international organizations, governments, or global NGOs.
- Strong background in high-level writing, editing, and content strategy.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft impactful high-level content.
- Demonstrated ability to manage crisis communications and reputational risk.
- Strong understanding of global humanitarian and geopolitical issues.
- Ability to lead large communication initiatives with multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
Languages:
- Fluency in English required.
- Working knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
