Position Overview
The Communications Officer (Consultant Level II) is a key role within WFP’s Communications and Media Office (COM), based in Washington, United States, with a remote work option. The officer will support the Senior Spokesperson and Head of WFP North America Communications to implement communication strategies aimed at increasing WFP’s visibility, advocacy impact, and fundraising success in the United States and Canada.
The Communications Officer will report directly to the Senior Spokesperson in Washington, working closely with the WFP Headquarters in Rome, Italy, and the global communications teams. This role involves strategic media engagement, content creation, advocacy support, and partnership building to enhance WFP’s profile and influence among stakeholders in the United States.
Key Responsibilities
The Communications Officer will be responsible for a wide range of activities, including:
1. Media Engagement and Visibility
- Secure interviews, speaking opportunities, and media coverage for WFP officials in the United States.
- Pitch stories to US media outlets, including national newspapers, television, and digital platforms.
- Maintain and cultivate relationships with journalists, editors, and media influencers.
- Monitor news coverage to ensure accurate reporting of WFP’s mission and activities.
2. Advocacy and Strategic Communication
- Contribute to the design and execution of communication and advocacy strategies targeting government agencies, donors, and strategic stakeholders in the United States.
- Prepare briefing notes, talking points, speeches, and presentation materials for senior leadership and high-profile visits.
- Identify strategic opportunities to raise awareness of global hunger issues and WFP initiatives in the United States and Canada.
3. Content Development
- Produce high-quality content for social media, websites, press releases, and public statements.
- Collaborate with WFP Goodwill Ambassadors, Advocates, and High-Level Supporters to amplify WFP messaging.
- Support digital campaigns to engage public audiences and raise funds for WFP operations globally.
4. Partnership and Collaboration
- Work closely with World Food Program USA and other key allies such as the UN Foundation on joint initiatives.
- Facilitate collaborations with government, private sector, and civil society stakeholders to strengthen WFP’s presence and influence in the United States.
- Support the planning and implementation of events, webinars, and high-level meetings.
5. Monitoring and Reporting
- Track media coverage, advocacy metrics, and communications outputs in the United States.
- Prepare reports highlighting outcomes, lessons learned, and recommendations for improving visibility and advocacy strategies.
- Contribute to post-event and campaign evaluations to ensure continuous improvement.

By the end of the 11-month contract, the Communications Officer will have:
- Significantly increased WFP’s visibility in the United States through media coverage, interviews, and speaking engagements.
- Developed and executed communication strategies that strengthened advocacy efforts among US stakeholders.
- Built partnerships and alliances to enhance WFP’s profile and fundraising capacity in the United States.
- Supported senior leadership and WFP Goodwill Ambassadors in generating engagement and awareness.
- Produced high-quality content, including press releases, social media campaigns, and advocacy materials.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Advanced university degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, or other relevant fields.
- Alternatively, a first degree combined with significant relevant professional experience.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of 6 years in media relations, strategic communications, public information, or journalism.
- Proven track record of pitching stories to journalists and media outlets in the United States.
- Experience working with US media, understanding Associated Press (AP) editorial style, and crafting content for North American audiences.
- Prior exposure to international development, humanitarian affairs, or UN communications is highly desirable.

Skills & Competencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong ability to work independently while coordinating with global teams across multiple time zones.
- Proficiency in MS Office, including PowerPoint and Publisher.
- Social media management skills: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
- Strong judgment, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.
- Cultural sensitivity and the ability to collaborate harmoniously with people from diverse backgrounds.
Languages
- Fluency in English (level C).
- Intermediate knowledge of a second UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese) is an asset.
Working Arrangements
- Remote work available from the United States, with Washington, DC as the primary duty station.
- Occasional travel may be required to support events, senior leadership visits, or collaborative initiatives.
